So you’re interested in becoming a member of the church, fantastic.  This information will answer your questions. Here’s what you need to know about church membership.

What’s in the name?  “Kirk” is the Scottish word for church.  Dunedin was founded by Scottish people so the congregation thought it would be creative to use a Scottish word for the name.  We call the name “Kirk Church” or simply “The Kirk.”

What we believe?  Kirk Church has a full doctrinal statement on our website, but the basic beliefs that we expect every member to affirm are: Jesus is God and our Savior, the Bible is God’s Word and the church is God’s family.  Go to WHAT WE BELIEVE for more.

What kind of church are you?  Kirk Church is a non-denominational Christian church.  We have members from almost every Christian denomination and many who have no church background.  We are not associated with any denomination but we enjoy working together with other churches in the area to accomplish God’s purposes.  We are not an interfaith church.  We believe the Christian message is unique and hold to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the hope for all people.

Do I have to be baptized to belong?  Baptism is an important symbol of the Christian faith.  Throughout the year we occasionally offer this ceremony to anyone who wants to be baptized. If you are interested, mark the back of the connection card.  We do not require baptism for membership, but encourage Christians to be baptized as a public confession of faith. Learn more about being BAPTISM here.

What about Communion? We take communion every week in our 9:30 am worship service and on the first Sunday of each month in our 11:00 am worship service.

What can a member expect from the church?  The church promises to serve its members in 7 ways:

  1. Worship services focused on Jesus Christ the author and finisher of our faith.
  2. Bible centered teaching and preaching.
  3. A prayerful community through our Flock Plan, prayer email blasts, Sunday prayer group and printed prayer lists.
  4. Love and support through small groups, notes of encouragement, pastoral care.
  5. A positive place to grow in your faith and bring your family and friends.
  6. Opportunities to use your gifts and talents
  7. A chance to impact the world with the Gospel in local and world missions.

What does the church expect of members?  We our members to be active in the following ways:

  1. Believe – in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
  2. Worship – faithfully attend worship services in order to nurture a grateful attitude to God for his incredible love and to learn how to live as a Christian.
  3. Give – give of your time, talents and treasure to strengthen the church.
  4. Pray – Seek God’s plan and presence in prayer.
  5. Love – Encourage one another and demonstrate God’s love by loving others.

Am I required to give a certain percentage of my money to the church? We encourage all Christians to become extravagant givers in supporting the mission of the church to take the life changing message of new life in Jesus Christ.  There is no giving requirement.

How is this church managed?  We have a board of elders who have been selected by the church.  This group meets monthly to pray and make decisions that will help grow the church spiritually and in number.  The elders work to keep the peace and unity of the church family with Biblical guidance.  In addition to the elders we have management teams with specific tasks, ie. Worship, Finance, Youth and Family, Men, Women, Concerts, Property, Outreach, Thrift Shop and more.  Members are welcome to serve on these teams.  In big things, like choosing elders and approving the annual budget and any adjustment to the church constitution, the congregation is asked to vote.  We vote once a year, or as needed on such matters.

What’s in the constitution?  The constitution or bylaws of the church are a requirement for any tax-exempt organization.  The constitution demonstrates the purpose and structure of the ministry.  A copy of the CONSTITUTION is available on our website.

So the church is not for profit?  Yes, we are a 501c3 not for profit church and all giving to Kirk Church and its ministries can be used as a charitable tax deduction.

Do you take stands on political or social issues?  We encourage our members to be good citizens and be involved as God leads them.  Our church does not take stands on political or social issues. We refer our congregation to study the Bible and pray when making decisions on the issues of the day.

How can I get to know more people?  We offer short term and year round small group opportunities for everyone.  Small groups may meet for tasks, or for prayer and Bible study.  You can find a full list of our small groups on our website.

Am I allowed to be a member if I’m not perfect?  None of us are perfect, join the crowd.  Yes, if you struggle with sin and temptation, you are welcome.  We are all on a journey to live a life that pleases God.  We celebrate God’s grace, forgiveness and infilling spirit and the encouragement of a community of believers in becoming the people God wants us to be.

Can I transfer from another church?  Yes, you can transfer your membership to Kirk Church from any previous church.  This is not required but upon request we will send your previous church a letter of transfer.  Many of our members had no previous church home, and some members choose to retain their membership in another church also.  This is fine by us.

I am a snowbird; can I still join?  Absolutely! We would love to be your church family when you are in Florida.  Even if you are only here one month a year you are welcome to join the family.  We understand that you may be faithful to a church in another place when not in Florida.  Faithfulness to Christ is the goal.  We also live stream our worship services and many of our snowbirds continue to attend online when not in Florida.

Can people who live stream become members?  Yes.  We welcome people from all around the world to make Kirk Church their church home.  If you live in our area, but feel led to worship with us each week, we invite you to become a member. Prayer and love know no distance.  We count online attenders in our Sunday attendance.  Online attenders can also give at our website to support the ministry.  We welcome you!

Do I have to attend a membership class before joining?  You do not need to attend a class to join.  We occasionally offer a Becoming Family hour long workshop, and our pastor has posted INFORMATION VIDEOS on our website to help people know more about our church.  Attending the seminar or watching the videos may be helpful, but this is not a requirement.

How do I join the church?  Simply mark “membership” on the back of the connection card and place it in the offering plate.  Online members may simply click on “Join the Church” button on our website and fill out the form.  We welcome you!
